What to expect in a free preview lesson
The purpose of a preview lesson is to give us a chance to meet face to face. You will see the studio where lessons will be held. I will give the potential student a mini lesson to gauge where he/she is in piano, making the progression to first lessons much easier and allows me to pick the right books to begin lessons. I will answer any questions you may have and we can discuss what we do in lessons, about recitals, and student activities opportunity.
A Typical Lesson Plan
Most lessons start with technique exercises like scales, cadences, and arpeggios. Then we move on to method books for beginners. Each student will also be working on one or two pieces they picked (with guidance from me). For these pieces, we will work on them until they are perfect and memorized. These are pieces that will be performed at recitals, CCMTA activities, or annual Piano Guild Audition. During the Summer and early Fall semester, we also work on the theory book, in preparation for Texas State Theory Exam in mid Fall.
Since lesson plans are customized according to each student, the typical plan may vary slightly so that it best fits each student's interest.
Method Books I Use
Method books teach you how to read music. The method books series I use a lot are Alfred and Bastien. Both publishers have series especially for younger beginners, grade school age beginners, older beginners, and adult beginners.
Theory Book I Use
Most students use "Just the Facts" theory books series. Book level begins in Kindergarten, then Grade 1 through 12. The series is written especially for preparation of Texas State Theory Test.
